The Threat

A warning from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says they will be targeting 17 American tech companies, including Microsoft, Apple, Google, Meta, Nvidia and Palantir. The list of targets includes Cisco, HP, Intel, Oracle, Microsoft, Apple, Google, Meta, IBM, Dell, Palantir, Nvidia, J.P. Morgan Chase, Tesla, GE, Spire Solution, and Boeing.

American information and artificial intelligence (AI) companies are "the main element" in designing and tracking the "terrorist operations" that the United States has conducted against Iran. "We will target American technology companies for every assassination in Iran," the post reads.

Geopolitical Context

The competition is heating up between SpaceX and Amazon over satellite orbits, where SpaceX claims Amazon's launches could interfere with Starlink. Amazon's attempt to acquire Globalstar to bolster its satellite internet capabilities further intensifies this rivalry.

My Take: The threats should be taken seriously—Iran has history of cyber operations and proxy attacks. This creates real security risk for US tech companies' Middle East operations and data centers. The broader issue: geopolitical fragmentation is now directly impacting tech infrastructure. Companies will need to harden Middle East operations and diversify supplier chains away from single geographies.
